thumb beverlyhills9 Als RTL4 in de zomer van 1992 begint met het uitzenden van één de populairste jongerenseries ooit is de reeks al een grote rage in Amerika. De alledaagse belevenissen op een middelbare school in het dure Beverly Hills zouden 10 seizoenen lang te zien zijn. Voor de 16-jarige tweeling Brandon en Brenda is het in het begin even wennen.

Samen met hun ouders verhuizen ze van Minnesota naar het zonnige Californië. De leerlingen van West Beverly High hebben meestal rijke ouders en een dure levensstijl, terwijl Brandon in The Peach Pit, de lokale cafetaria, moet gaan werken om wat bij te verdienen. Maar het tweetal past zich snel aan en maakt ook nieuwe vrienden.

thumb beverlyhills902105 Samen met de mooie Kelly, de stoere Steve, de muzikale David, de rebelse Dylan, de tuttige Donna en studiebol Andrea doorlopen ze de middelbare school en, vanaf seizoen 4, ook de universiteit. De vooral in Amerika gevoelig liggende thema's als seks en drugs werden door de makers daarbij niet vermeden. De serie draaide echter niet alleen om moeilijke onderwerpen.

Er was ook veel aandacht voor muziek, zowel op de soundtrack als door optredens in The Peach Pit after Dark, de club die halverwege de reeks werd geopend. Hier traden tal van nieuwe artiesten op waarvan sommigen inmiddels wereldberoemd zijn. Dat was ook het geval met de jonge acteurs die in korte tijd uitgroeiden tot tieneridolen. Hun beeltenissen verschenen op tal van merchandising, van schoolartikelen tot barbiepoppen.

thumb beverlyhills902108 Na bijna 300 afleveringen eindige Beverly Hills 90210 met het huwelijk van Donna en David. Acteur Luke Perry, die Dylan speelde, grapte dat de serie voornamelijk bestond uit siliconen en haarlak: allebei ontzettend lang houdbaar en daarom zal het lang duren voordat iedereen de serie is vergeten.

Hierin heeft hij gelijk gekregen want acht jaar na de laatste uitzending is er een vervolg gekomen, ditmaal kortweg 90210 genoemd. In Nederland was de eerste aflevering te zien op 2 januari 2009. Van de originele acteurs keerden Jennie Garth (Kelly), Shannen Doherty (Brenda) en Joe E. Tata (cafetaria-eigenaar Nat) terug in hun oorspronkelijke rol.
