thumb Animaniacs01 Deze tekenfilm is een reeks met daarin verschillende series. De show is ontstaan uit een samenwerking tussen Warner Bros. en Steven Spielberg, en gemaakt door Spielbergs productiebedrijf Amblin Entertainment. Gastheren van de show zijn drie figuurtjes die zichzelf de 'Warner Brothers' noemen.

Eigenlijk zijn het de twee 'brothers' Yacko en Wacko en hun 'sister' Dot. In iedere aflevering van Animaniacs zit een filmpje met deze karakters. De Warner Brothers zijn bedacht door Tom Ruegger. Het karakterontwerp van Yacko, Wacko en Dot is een knipoog naar figuurtjes die in de jaren '20 en '30 zijn ontworpen, zoals Disney's Oswald the Lucky Rabbit en Felix the Cat.

thumb Animaniacs21 Het 'excuus' voor het los rondlopen van deze drie prettig gestoorde figuren komt terug in de titelsong: ze zouden in de jaren '30 zijn opgesloten in de karakteristieke watertoren van het Warner Bros. studiopark, maar zijn in de jaren '90 ontsnapt. Tot welke 'soort' de Warner Brothers (en sister) behoren is opzettelijk dubbelzinnig gebleven.

Zijn het nou een soort hondjes met een kattenstaart? Dat is al een grap op zich: figuurtjes uit de beginjaren van de tekenfilm waren ook min of meer inwisselbaar. Zo is Mickey Mouse eigenlijk Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, maar dan met ronde oren. Dat past goed bij het karakter van de show: alles wordt op de hak genomen.

thumb Animaniacs15 Het zit vol met grappen en sketches die doen denken aan bijvoorbeeld Jerry Lewis of de Marx Brothers. De humor is dan ook wat meer op volwassenen gericht dan bij een gemiddelde animatieserie. Daarnaast heeft Spielberg er een sport van gemaakt om in iedere aflevering een muzikaal intermezzo in te lassen, ook weer met de nodige humor en persiflages.

Naast de Warner Brothers zijn er nog andere terugkerende series in Animaniacs:

Pinky and the Brain zijn een hele domme en een hele slimme laboratoriummuis. Pinky vind alles best en zorgt voor de vrolijke noot, terwijl Brain in iedere aflevering werkt aan zijn ambitieuze plan om de wereld te veroveren. Wat natuurlijk iedere keer weer jammerlijk mislukt.
Slappy and Skippy Squirrel zijn twee eekhoorns. Slappy is een arrivé in het showbizzvak, misschien wel familie van Tex Avery's Nutty Squirrel. Maar in tegenstelling tot de hyperactieve karakters van Avery heeft Slappy het allemaal wel gezien, en trakteert de wereld op haar zure commentaar. De jeugdige Skippy moet het vak nog leren, en fungeert als haar aangever.
